Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis, responsible for trade, and his team will help conclude trade deals already negotiated with Australia and New Zealand, and DG Commerce will be at the centre of discussions on the future relationship with the UK after Brexit. They have also evolved to cover a wider range of areas to facilitate trade. These include public procurement opportunities, business visas, mutual recognition of professional qualifications, product certification, intellectual property rights and cross-border trade in services. MERCOSUR: The European Union and the Mercosur countries, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, concluded lengthy negotiations in June 2019 for a pioneering trade agreement. Like all EU free trade agreements, the EU-Mercosur agreement is based on the principle that trade should not be at the expense of the environment or working conditions. Ireland has a small, open economy, which relies heavily on exports, but as part of the European Union it is more important when it comes to trade. Ireland`s trade balance is structurally surplus. According to the WTO, Ireland exported a record $164.871 million worth of goods in 2018, while it exported $107,614 million worth of goods, representing a trade surplus of USD 58.854 million, an increase of 17.53 per cent over 2018. In services, the country imported $205.294 million in services in 2018 and $218.030 million. The situation could be more complex in the case of joint free trade agreements in which EU Member States also participate, so that the individual agreement of EU Member States for an amendment may also be necessary. The World Trade Organization is an open trade organization and a trading system.
WTO agreements cover different areas of trade, such as trade in goods and services and intellectual property. The organization also offers Member State governments the opportunity to negotiate trade agreements and resolve trade disputes. The prioritization of a trade and investment partnership with Africa, which advances the long-term goal of a free trade area between Africa and the EU between continents, is also on the agenda. Both sides pledged to implement the Paris climate agreement and to cooperate on the climate aspects of trade between the two sides, including the fight against deforestation. The EU also wants maximum transparency in the negotiation of trade agreements. The European Commission publishes negotiating proposals and details on meetings with interested parties, including business groups, trade union representatives and citizens, where they can learn more about agreements that may be of concern to them. It describes the bilateral and multilateral trade agreements to which that country belongs, including with the United States. Includes websites and other resources that allow U.S. companies to get more information about how they can use these agreements.
Ireland has a trade surplus of EUR 1 billion vis-à-vis Mercosur, with 269 Irish companies exporting 1.7 billion euros worth of goods and services and generating imports worth 700,000 euros. In principle, a protocol could allow us to continue to participate or respect the agreement by which the UK would become a third party with the EU (and, if necessary, the EU Member States and the third country).
